Balanced offense pushes STAB boys basketball into state quarterfinals

St. Anne’s-Belfield boys basketball just wanted a shot in the VISAA Division I tournament after a hard charge down the stretch.

Now they’re making the most of it.

The ninth-seeded Saints beat No. 8 Bishop Sullivan 68-59 on the road Tuesday night to earn a spot in the state quarterfinals where they’ll face Paul VI.

STAB trailed 31-30 at the break but by the end of the third quarter they’d taken the lead 51-46. Mesiah Woods led the Saints with 18 points and four rebounds while Nick Reese finished with 14 points and eight boards.

Woods and Reese were just the leaders of another balanced offensive effort as Malachi Poindexter scored 12 points and snagged seven rebounds while Dalton Taylor notched 11 points and five boards. Justin Taylor rounded out the five STAB players in double digits with 10 points on the night.

STAB struggled to contain Siena commit Shawn Walker who poured in 27 points for the Crusaders, but the defense stepped up against the rest of the Bishop Sullivan lineup and crashed the boards as a team to pick up the win.

STAB will play Paul VI on the road Wednesday night.
