A Little Extra: Sixth-seeded Albemarle girls lacrosse knocks off North Stafford in regionals

Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team got things going in the postseason with a 19-8 dismantling of North Stafford Monday afternoon.

It didn’t take long for No. 6-seeded Albemarle to take control either,  and jumping on North Stafford early was part of the gameplan.

The girls did a great job working together through the heat this afternoon,” said Albemarle coach Brittany McElheny, who’s team led 14-4 at the break. “Our team focus for today was extra… give me extra and then we can rotate people. Every girl did this tonight and it showed.”

Kelsey Myers gave the Patriots a huge spark with five goals and 11 draw controls, leading a 19-10 advantage on the draw for Albemarle as a team. Anna Murray chipped in four of those controls and scored a goal as well.

Freshman Leigh Young had a huge day on offense with six goals and also picked up four ground balls. Ella Dofflemyer finished with a hat trick while Anne Spencer scored twice and Ashley Cramer dished out two assists. Cramer and Jordyn Solak each picked up five ground balls. Reaginn Bingaman led the Patriots with three forced turnovers.

In the cage, Morgan Coleman had 12 saves while Sophia Espie stopped a pair of shots.

Albemarle will travel Thursday to No. 2 seed Patrick Henry-Roanoke for a 5 p.m. game in the Region 5D semifinals. The Patriots’ relatively low seed will force them to be road warriors the duration of the region tournament, but they edged Patrick Henry back in March 13-12 on the road.
